What is the Course Design?
This race was designed because racers in 2008 requested that we “head to
South Carolina and real cliffs.” Plus, they wanted a longer, start-to-finish race design. Imagine doing a sequence of your favorite activities. The race will start at the USNWC. We will have a dedicated opening for the river and whitewater rafting on the training site used by our Olympic kayakers. Imagine spending 1-2 hours canoeing somewhere on the
Catawba River . Then 2-3 hours mountain biking . Then rappelling down a cliff, with all gear provided. Then 1-2 hours orienteering. Imagine travelling with your friends at whatever pace you want… in a less familiar course area. Perhaps 40 miles total… although we may not agree on the shortest navigational choices…
For those who have done any of the 8-hour NCARS races, you should do fine. For those who have only done a 4-hour race, you will benefit from sometraining, and you should do fine! Given the variety of activities, the day should fly by.
There will be many surprises at this race. You can expect to raft, bike, trek/run and do special challenges. All safety equipment andsupervision will be provided, as at the shorter races described above. We guarantee that you will see some beautiful areas. And somespectacular new areas.
Bring your friends. This race is open to anyone in teams of 1-4, coed or single gender.
What should I bring?
Required individual gear: a functional bike, bike helmet, sneakers, food, a pen, compass, layers of clothes, a smiling attitude J
Recommended gear: small backpack, hydration bladder or water bottles, raincoat, bikeshoes, small first aid kit, extra bike repair tools, tubes, pump or CO2cartridges, more friends… (Although we are pressing against daylight savings time, headlamps should not be required either J. )
